wall art · map · gift · engrave · glue-up
A layered wooden map of North Carolina with a pine-shaped hole for each of its 43 state parks and recreation areas, its name engraved on a little tag beside it. Each time you visit one, press its peg in. The coast and the county lines are scored, and a title plaque, a contour-line backdrop and a stacked frame finish it for the wall or the desk. Add your own places by latitude and longitude.
Places
Outside of the frame. 381 × 279 mm is 15 × 11 inches, which cuts from 12 × 16 inch sheets.

Marker shape
Height of each peg and its hole.
Name outline
Height of the capitals on the name tags.
On the plaque. Leave empty for no plaque.
Engraved along the frame's bottom rail, like the little plate on a picture frame.
Engraved on the back of the back panel, for whoever takes the board down and turns it over. It is cut with everything else; the panel goes on with that face to the wall.
Title lettering
Backdrop
Layers of rails. 3 is level with the map; 4 stands one layer proud of it, a shadow box.
Measure it with calipers. Sheets sold as 3 mm are often 2.7 to 3.2.
How much the beam burns away. Higher makes joints tighter. 0.10 to 0.20 suits most diode lasers.
