The workhorse. Set the outside dimensions and the joints re-cut themselves to your material, so the same design works in 3 mm basswood or 6 mm plywood. Choose an open tray, a fully closed box, or a sliding lid you push open by its lip.
Cut and assembled on an xTool M2: the finger joints press together without glue and the sliding lid runs on its rails and stops on the lip.

Top
Recommended · 3 × thickness (2.8 mm)
On this box: width 15 × 8.0 · depth 11 × 7.3 · height 9 × 6.7 mm
A target, not an exact width: each edge is split into an odd number of equal fingers, never fewer than three.
Sliding lid only: the room left at each side of the lid and above it, so it slides. 0.3 mm runs freely; less is snugger.
Engraved on the outside of each face you fill in; leave a box empty for a plain face. The letters shrink to fit as you write more, down to 2.5 mm tall, and each face takes as much as its size allows.
An open tray has no lid.
Lettering style
Measure it with calipers. Sheets sold as 3 mm are often 2.7 to 3.2.
How much the beam burns away. Higher makes joints tighter. 0.10 to 0.20 suits most diode lasers.
